I went to the Detroit performance of the funky Turtle tour and had a total blast!

The set included a funky band intro solo chart and was followed by "How Do Ya'll Know", then another funky jam including solos extraordinaire by the man. Then a tribute to our great country was given with a trumpet solo by Harry on "America the Beautiful". The second half of the song broke and all funk was loose (in the New Orleans tradition of such songs as "A Closer Walk With Thee"). Then Harry and the funksters broke out an old classic, "Drift Away" ("gimmie the beat boy to free my soul..."). The band then returned to their own stuff doing "Eyes of the Seeker" with Harry on bass. The band took a break and Harry did a piano solo including blues-drenched riffs and funky piano action. The song, if I recall, was called "Send Me Someone". The band returned to perform "Reason to Believe", then they pulled out the old Sly and the Family Stone classic "Thank You (falletin me be mice elf agin)" and then went on to do "Mind on the Matter" and a sweet rendition of "I Just Whisper Your Name", which went off on a tangent of "Amazing Grace" and back again.

The encore (preceded by the chant of "Harry" by the entire theatre) was another funky tune which sounded vaguely familiar but I couldn't quite place.

After the show, my date and I went and stood by the exit to see if we could get a few autographs, and guess what, we were successful. Harry was more than happy to sign for all who waited. I also had a five minute conversation with Mark Mullins, the trombone player, and then with Harry. I mentioned to him that I sing with my college big band, and as I was leaving he said, and I quote, "Good luck man!"

So all in all the concert was totally bitchin and I had the greatest experience of my life that balmy Indian summer night in Detroit.
