Having been a Harry fan since his first album, I have long been waiting to
see them man in concert. But living in Iowa, there is not too many huge
arena's for him to draw a crowd. When I heard he was coming here to the
campus of Iowa State University and playing in Stephan's Auditorium, only a
five minute walk from my dorm, I just about flipped my lid. I bought
tickets the hour they went on sale and got very good seventh row seats.
The evening of May 1st couldn't come fast enough. Even though it was the
weekend before finals, I didn't care, I had to see Harry. My girlfriend
and I arrived 20 minutes before the show was to start and watched as the
auditorium filled to capacity. Harry took the stage 15 minutes late, but
it didn't matter. He still received a huge welcome. Iowa State loved
Harry, as he soon found out.
He started with "Lets Just Kiss", and then did several others off his new
CD, but it was obvious that the crowd was wanting some more upbeat music,
and Harry gladly obliged. He did a few upbeat songs with the orchestra and
then kicked everyone off the stage except himself. He then talked about
himself for a while. We heard stories of his childhood, his club days, and
his run-in's with Sinatra. But the best was his story from earlier in the
day. It seemed as though while he was outside the Auditorium taking some
pictures, the mussels he had for lunch suddenly attacked him. He then put
down the mic and did a great impression of himself running frantically for
a bathroom. It was hilarious! Look out Seinfeld!
After his stories, Harry sat down and just starting playing his piano and
signing, and the crowd just loved it. After several magnificent songs, his
quartet came back out and they jammed out for the next hour. First they
just played songs and impressed everyone with their wonderful solos. Then
Harry decided to liven it up, so he and the drummer switched positions.
They then challenged each other on solos, going back and forth several
times. Harry then called the drummer back to his spot and Harry took the
standing bass, and the bassist took the piano. That was amazing. Each did
some of the best solos I have ever heard. Was I impressed at all their
talents. Then to top it off, Harry cut off everyone except the drummer and
he and the saxophone player got into a tap dance competition! What else
can the man do?!
After all the improv-ing was done, they calmed down, did a few more numbers
with the quartet, one with the orchestra and then left to a standing
ovation. They came back for one encore, and the audience never even sat down.
I was thoroughly impressed with Harry and his show. It was by far the most
entertaining concert I have ever seen. Bravo to the man and I can't wait
for him to come back to Ames. ISU loves you Harry!
